Mattamy Homes Donates $15,000 to Treasure Coast Wildlife Center During Third Annual Tortoise Trot 5k

On Sunday, Jan. 11, more than 100 runners, walkers and nature enthusiasts gathered at the recently opened KC Trails South Trailhead in Newfield for the third annual Tortoise Trot 5k. Hosted in partnership with the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center, the race has quickly become an annual community staple for a cause, with Mattamy Homes making a $15,000 contribution to the organization in support of its mission to rehabilitate and return injured, ill, and orphaned animals to the wild, as well as offer educational services to the public at large.

The 2026 race followed a non-technical course made up of mostly two-track dirt and grass roads, providing runners with a scenic path through some of the most pristine natural areas on the Treasure Coast.

“Newfield was created to celebrate this land and the natural beauty that defines it,” said Dan Grosswald, Mattamy Homes’ Southeast Florida Division president. “The Tortoise Trot 5k gives the community a chance to experience these trails up close while supporting the important work of the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center.”

The 5k concluded with age-group awards and fun swag bags. After the race, participants were shuttled back to Newfield Farm for post-event celebrations, featuring Affogator Drip Coffee, Fleet Feet, Frittata Café, Improved Motions and Sunkissed Sips. Representatives from the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center were also on site, inviting attendees to interact with a few special guests: a snake, an owl, and Tripod the gopher tortoise.

Participants were then invited to visit the Harvest House, Newfield’s Community Supported Agriculture building, to shop farm fresh produce and handmade goods from Newfield Farm and other local vendors.

It was an honor to host this year’s Tortoise Trot 5k and give back to an organization that protects our region’s wildlife. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every attendee who showed up with enthusiasm and supported our community!

This year’s Tortoise Trot was particularly special, as it coincided with a major environmental milestone for our community: last year, Martin County’s first-ever gopher tortoise recipient site opened within KC Trails at the Kiplinger Conservancy, reinforcing Newfield’s long-term commitment to conservation and responsible development. The new, 30-acre sanctuary is currently home to several relocated tortoises and will ultimately accommodate up to 50.
