Citrus Grove Elementary “G.O.A.T.S.” Walk with Goats at KC Trails
What better way to teach students about the world than by immersing them in an unforgettable experience in nature? This was our thought when we took Citrus Grove Elementary “G.O.A.T.S” outdoors for our “Walk with Goats” event at KC Trails.
The event was held to reward the top student readers at Citrus Grove, who have earned the title of G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time). In recognition of their achievements, we arranged for these students to enjoy some time on the trails with actual goats. This unique blend of nature and celebration created an unforgettable experience for the school’s star readers!
“The buzz in the library when this event was announced was amazing,” said Sharon Windsor, media specialist for Citrus Grove Elementary. “Our Diamondback participants are our most voracious readers—the top of the top. These students love reading and earned the points not knowing that this extra special prize would be earned from their efforts. It’s wonderful to acknowledge their passion in this unique way.”
The joy and excitement were evident as the students eagerly interacted with the friendly goats, making this experience an unforgettable reward for their hard work. The smiles on their faces truly said it all.
For the event, we partnered with Harmony Hope Stables, a Palm City charitable organization and a certified PATH (professional association of therapeutic horsemanship) center. Professionals from Harmony Hope Stables led the students on a guided walk of KC Trails.
Then, students showed off their skills and flexed their creative muscles while grooming the goats, feeding them treats, taking photos with them, and participating in musical activities.
Citrus Grove Elementary G.O.A.T. Avery Lehmkuhl said, “It was fun! I like the goat Whitney best. She was so sweet. I felt special being able to go.”
MCSDReads is a Martin County School District independent reading incentive program. On the last day of each quarter, Citrus Grove Elementary awards one student the G.O.A.T. prize for their grade. The recipient receives a certificate to take home and another for display outside their classroom, proudly proclaiming, “We have a G.O.A.T. in this classroom.” With every page turned, students are not just reading—they’re reaching new heights and growing each day.
We plan to make Walk with Goats a recurring experience, serving as a celebration for the students’ hard work.
Jennifer Russell, chair of the Martin County School Board, also lauded the effort. “Instilling a love of reading in children early on is one of the most effective ways possible to ensure their lifelong pursuit of knowledge,” she said. “We love what they’ve created at Citrus Grove with the G.O.A.T. program for readers and really appreciate the creative way that Mattamy Homes took this to the next level. Hopefully it’s the type of program that could take off districtwide.”
